Ghana international John Paintsil is recovering at home after being hospitalised on Tuesday suffering from exhaustion and dehydration.

The former West Ham, Fulham and Leicester full-back was admitted to a hospital in Accra days after he was arrested and bailed over an alleged assault on his wife.

"John Paintsil was unfortunately hospitalised this morning suffering from exhaustion and dehydration," read a statement published on the Ghana FA website by Paintsil's media adviser, Ebenezer Aidoo.

"He received medical care at a hospital in Accra this morning and he has been released to go home to continue with his recovery.

"The past five days have taken a severe emotional toll on the entire Paintsil family, Richlove and John especially, and that toll manifested itself in the unfortunate incident this morning.

"The Paintsil family is immensely grateful to the Government of Ghana and the Ghana Football Association for the big support they have given and continue to give the family.

"We ask the media to give the entire family privacy during this difficult time."

Paintsil, 31, joined Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv last summer and featured for Ghana at this year's African Nations Cup.
