Newcastle v Fulham live!

16 May 2009 14:04
90 + 3 ALL OVER: European hopefuls Fulham rock Shearer's mission to save Newcastle from Premier League relegation with a smash-and-grab 1-0 victory at St James' Park.[LNB]90 + 1 Great save from Schwarzer as he dives low to his right to deny Butt from close range. Newcastle fans begin to stream out of the stadium.[LNB]90 ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of three minutes added time.[LNB]89 Fulham break forward as heavy rain begins to fall. But Johnson scuffs his effort well wide.[LNB]87 I'm not sure Newcastle have any ideas left. Fulham look comfortable as Martins blasts wide.[LNB]85 A free-kick for Newcastle midway into the Fulham half, but the excellent visiting defence again clear with ease.[LNB]84 Johnson receives a ticking off from referee Webb for clattering Butt.[LNB]83 Fulham are in no rush. When in possession they are happy to keep passing around midfield, unlike Newcastle, who are lumping things forward ASAP.[LNB]81 Carroll immediately shows his intent as he clatters into Hangeland's ribs in an aerial challenge and gives away a foul.[LNB]80 Shearer opts to send on Carroll as Viduka's afternoon comes to an end.[LNB]78 However, it is Martins who causes problems at the other end of the pitch as the Newcastle striker forces a fine save from Schwarzer before Hangeland hoofs clear.[LNB]77 The last thing weary Newcastle defenders will want to face is Johnson's pace.[LNB]75 With 15 minutes remaining there are two changes. Johnson comes on for Fulham, replacing Nevland. Newcastle introduce Lovenkrands in place of Gutierrez.[LNB]73 Newcastle look like they are getting ready to introduced one of Monday's substitution heroes, Peter Lovenkrands.[LNB]72 Nevland forces Haprer to tip over with a powerful strike. Fulham supporters are offering 'Oles' as their team play keep ball.[LNB]69 Fulham want a free-kick on the edge of the Newcastle area when Steven Taylor appeared to pull down Dempsey, but Webb is not interested. The Cottagers are looking to run the clock down now.[LNB]67 Danger for Fulham as Newcastle win a free-kick 25 yards from goal and specialist Ryan Taylor is over the ball. However, he curls well over the top.[LNB]64 They say things do not go right for you when you are at the bottom and Newcastle will wonder how they are losing this match. But Fulham have done exactly what they have been doing all season and have been ruthlessly well organised.[LNB]62 Newcastle reshuffle as Ryan Taylor replaces Guthrie. Beye has moved to centre-back with Ryan Taylor on the right.[LNB]60 Things get worse for Newcastle as Bassong is shown a straight red card for hauling down Kamara. The Magpies player was the last man when the pair were chasing a long ball and is correctly dismissed.[LNB]59 Fulham are more than happy with the way the game is going and are playing for a smash-and-grab win.[LNB]57 Martins does well to get to the byline and cross, but the ball just evades Viduka. Fulham are eventually forced to put out for a corner. The visitors again clear the danger.[LNB]56 Guthire moves forward out of midfield and sets his sights, but the effort flies over the bar from 25 yards. Are Newcastle missing Owen? Will we see soon see Andy Carroll?[LNB]54 Fulham - whose manager, Hodgson, has remained in his dugout throughout the game, unlike Shearer who stands on the touchline wishing he was playing - cannot get out of their half.[LNB]53 That flurry of action has cranked up the noise level as Newcastle win another corner. Guthrie's near-post delivery is headed away by Nevland.[LNB]51 From the resulting corner Viduka heads in, but the goal is ruled out by referee Webb, who correctly spots Nolan has obstructed Schwarzer.[LNB]50 Hangeland heads clear. But the danger is not over as Newcastle win a free-kick on the left. Nolan gets his head to the ball, but Etuhu clears off the line for as corner.[LNB]49 The Magpies are again on the front foot as makeshift left-back Duff moves forward. Play swaps to the opposite flank and Beye wins a free-kick. Guthrie can cross from here.[LNB]47 Newcastle pick up where they left off. Nolan crosses from the right and Martins blazes a first-time volley over the bar.[LNB]46 WE'RE BACK: Newcastle get the second half under way. Will Shearer have been able to produce an inspirational team talk or will Hodgson's disciplined Fulham hand on to their lead and reinforced their continental credentials.[LNB]45 + 1 HALF-TIME: The first half ends with Fulham 1-0 in front. Newcastle have dominated possession, but Kamara's break-away goal has given the visitors the lead. Can Shearer inspire a turn around?[LNB]45 ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of one minute added time.[LNB]44 After a scramble, Gutierrez has another effort cleared behind. Fulham boot the second corner well up field. Newcastle fans are not impressed.[LNB]43 The goal is a body blow for Newcastle, but they almost respond immediately as Gutierrez sees and effort deflect for a corner.[LNB] With Newcastle screaming for offside, Nevland breaks clear of Bassong before committing Harper and rolling to Kamara who smashes into the roof of the net from close range. Replays suggest the offside is very close.[LNB]41 GOAL KAMARA (0-1)!!![LNB]40 Newcastle stand off Fulham and Kamara flicks a backheel to Nevland who curls just wide of the far post. There were inches in that. Neatly played by the Cottagers but poor defending from the Magpies.[LNB]38 Viduka and Hangeland are playing out a very interesting, muscular, battle. At the moment I would say that the latter is just edging it.[LNB]37 Fulham build a rare attack as Nevland sprays the ball to the left. Dempsey almost breaks onto the ball inside the 18-yard area, but Harper is alive to the attack and picks a knock when colliding with the Fulham midfielder.[LNB]35 Guthrie again hits the ball into the box, but Fulham clear Taylor's back-post header.[LNB]34 Newcastle win another free-kick. This time wide on the right.[LNB]32 Guthrie pings the resulting free-kick into the box. But the ball is too high for Bassong as Schwarzer without needing to jump.[LNB]31 We have the first booking of the afternoon. Murphy flies into Gutierrez from behind and is correctly booked.[LNB]30 Viduka is on his heels as Butt passes forward and Hangeland comes in to intercept. Excellent, alert defending from the Fulham giant.[LNB]28 Butt's passing radar is out so far as he again forces Beye to back-track. However, Newcastle win the ball again and build another attack. Fulham are being forced further and further in to their own territory.[LNB]27 Dempsey has been Fulham's star man so far, but he has not quite been able to apply a killer pass. But he is drifting in from the left with great effect.[LNB]26 As the noise goes up a notch, Viduka wins a header in the box but his head just drifts wide of the far post.[LNB]25 The first, 'Shearer, Shearer' chants ring out to earn a wave to the stands from the man himself.[LNB]24 Duff dinks an excellent ball into the box, but Taylor's chest control lets him down and Schwarzer gathers.[LNB]22 The Magpies pile back up the other end and Beye wins a corner. Guthrie - whose corners were excellent against Boro - delivers. Hangeland heads clear.[LNB]21 Kamara wins a corner as an excellent ball from Dempsey, who is growing in influence, causes Bassong to challenge. Butt volleys the corner clear.[LNB]20 Gutierrez is Newcastle's out ball. Shearer appears to have identified Pantsil as the weak link in Fulham's excellent defence.[LNB]18 I spoke too soon as first Nevland has a shot charged down and then Gera forces Harper to dive low to his right and save from 18 yards.[LNB]17 Newcastle will be worried that they are not taking their chances. But they have made a very encouraging start. Fulham's midfield is struggling to get a foothold.[LNB]15 Martins hits the post. The Nigerian breaks into the penalty area and, from an acute angle is denied by the frame of the goal. It is surely just a matter of time before the home side take the lead.[LNB]12 Newcastle are knocking on the door as Guthrie shoots straight at Schwarzer. The Australian is then forced to save a Duff cross.[LNB]10 Fulham are keeping their composure and are attempting to get their passing game going, but at the minute they are struggling to get Nevland and Kamara into the game.[LNB]8 Butt gives the ball away when attempting a cross-field pass and Beye is forced to foul Dempsey. Referee Webb dishes out a ticking off.[LNB]5 Gutierrez breaks forward and crosses for Viduka, but Schwarzer claims. All Newcastle in the opening minutes. Martins is also looking lively.[LNB]3 A very lively start as Murphy is adjudged to have fouled Gutierrez. Newcastle are on the front foot and Viduka is pulling the strings.[LNB]KICK-OFF: Fulham get the game going. St James' Park, where Bobby Robson is in the stands to watch - is rocking.[LNB] It looks like it is panic over for Fulham as Murphy is back to his warm-up. For anyone who doesn't know, Manchester United have just drawn with Arsenal and won the Premier League.[LNB] Newcastle's mascots, Monty and Maggie, are down in front of me posing for pictures on the pitch. I presume they are supposed to be Magpies. But, for anyone with a good memory, they look more like the bad guy crow - Stiletto Mafiosa - from Danger Mouse to me. You know, Greenback's henchman...[LNB] There is a slight concern for Fulham. Murphy is down on the pitch having his calf massaged by the Cottagers' physio. Hodgson will be concerned that a pre-match injury has been sustained. His captain has had a superb season.[LNB] The teams are going through their passing and stretching drills on the pitch. I can make out Iain Dowie leading the Newcastle players, I could spot his good looks anywhere. Fulham look focused and disciplined with the attitude Hodgson has successfully instilled. The stadium is beginning to fill with a sea of black and white while the visiting supporters are up in the highest echelons of the stadium having made their long trip from the capital.[LNB] I had a stroll around the stadium before starting duty this afternoon and there is a real buzz. The crowds were in Shearer's bar and The Strawberry pub (No, I did not stop off for a spot of liquid refreshment) well before kick-off. There is an atmosphere on the banks of the Tyne that few clubs in the Premier League can match.[LNB] With only two games of the season remaining, will Owen play for Newcastle again? How much will the Magpies miss the forward? Can Fulham dent Shearer's SOS bid today? The West London have had a brilliant season and will provide a completely different opposition to Boro.[LNB]Referee: Howard Webb[LNB] Fulham keep faith in last weekend's two-goal hero Kamara as Johnson is fit for the bench. Roy Hodgson's well-organised midfield and defence has a familiar look.[LNB] The big news is that Michael Owen is missing. The word is that the under-fire striker sustained a groin injury in training on Friday. Martins starts alongside Viduka in the only change from the team that defeated Middlesbrough on Monday. Butt is captain.[LNB]Fulham team: Mark Schwarzer, Paul Konchesky, John Pantsil, Brede Hangeland, Erik Nevland, Zoltan Gera, Danny Murphy (c), Diomansy Kamara, Aaron Hughes, Dickson Etuhu, Clint Dempsey. Subs: Pascal Zuberbuhler, Andy Johnson, Bobby Zamora, Olivier Dacourt, Julian Gray, Toni Kallio, Chris Baird.[LNB]Newcastle team: Steve Harper, Habib Beye, Steven Taylor, Sebastien Bassong, Damien Duff, Nicky Butt (c), Kevin Nolan, Danny Guthrie, Jonas Gutierrez, Mark Viduka, Oba Martins. Subs: Fabricio Coloccini, Tim Krul, Ryan Taylor, Alan Smith, Shola Ameobi, Peter Lovenkrands, Andy Carroll[LNB]The team news is in![LNB] There promises to be a great atmosphere on Tyneside. The match is a sell-out and with Newcastle boss Alan Shearer hinting that he could stay on, beyond the end of the season the Geordie faithful are likely to be in fine voice.[LNB] This match at St James' Park is crucial at both ends of the table. Newcastle are fighting for their top-flight status while Fulham are looking to hold on to seventh spot and the final Europa League qualifying position. Let's hope for a good game.[LNB] Welcome to our live commentary of the Premier League clash between Newcastle and Fulham.[LNB]
