Mark Viduka close to Fulham move

Viduka, according to the Daily Express, flew to the capital last night for talks with Roy Hodgson. The 33 year-old was expected to join Portsmouth. However, the deal appears to have collaspsed after the south coast club's financial troubles halted any move. The Australian, who is a free agent after his contract with the Championship club ran out, has reportedly asked for a two-year contract. This, though, may prove a stumbling block for an injury-prone player who made just 12 league appearances last season. The striker could prove a valuable addition to Hodgson's squad who will be hoping to challenge in Europe this season after their seventh-placed finish last season propelled them into the Europa League qualifiers. Hodgson, who took Inter Milan to the Uefa Cup final in 1997, would be hoping to use Viduka's experience at the highest level in European football to help his relatively inexperienced squad. Viduka, who enjoyed the best days of his playing career with David O'Leary's Leeds United and reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2001, will have a medical at Craven Cottage today. Meanwhile, Mohamed Al Fayed, the Fulham owner, has told Hodgson that he is free to spend on his squad as the club look to build on their remarkable turnaround in fortunes following Hodgson's arrival in Dec 2007. A source close to Al Fayed said: 'The chairman has told the manager that he would rather see players being signed. 'He wants to build on what has been achieved.'
