Knight relishes captaincy

Monday Oct 23 2006 15:54

Stand-in Fulham captain Zat Knight is enjoying his new responsibility with the Cottagers and is hoping the club can build on an excellent start to the season.

Knight struggled for form and fitness last term, but has stepped up to the mark this time around, winning the armband in the absence of the injured Luis Boa Morte.

"I feel that I am more mature, that I'm concentrating for 90 minutes and not just 80," Knight said after the 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.

"There is a bit of responsibility in the captaincy and I'm really enjoying it.

"We have got standards for ourselves and we want to finish in the top nine. And then hopefully if Europe comes, it will be an added bonus.

"The boys have done really well this season. For some reason we have got this fighting spirit and we showed it again against Villa.

"We got a lot of stick last season, especially with our away form, and we are trying to prove people wrong, because every season Fulham are written off and people say we are going to get relegated."
