Jagielka in contract talks

Phil Jagielka is hopeful that negotiations over a new contract can be finalised during the summer. Everton are also in advanced talks over extending the contracts of goalkeeper Tim Howard and defender Joseph Yobo as they look to build on their success this season. Jagielka was left devastated when a serious knee injury against Manchester City - six days after he scored the winning penalty in the FA Cup semi-final shootout win over Manchester United - cost him his place in the final with Chelsea. The 26-year-old is expected back in October and he is hoping he has his new deal sorted out by then. "I'd like to think so (that something might happen with a new contract)," he told the club's official website. "Obviously if I had not got injured, discussions might have been a lot easier in the summer." The former Sheffield United ace was cheered up by the fact that he was awarded with the Players' Player and Supporters' Player of the Year awards at the club's annual awards ceremony on Monday night. "I've never won a Players' Player award and I have always wanted to," he added. "The club has been fantastic for me and the response (to the injury) has been crazy but amazing."
