    Hughes: Schwarzer exit not inevitable

    20 Aug 2010 - 15:56:55

Fulham manager Mark Hughes is refusing to concede defeat in his battle to keep goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer at Craven Cottage.

The Cottagers have turned down two bids from Arsenal for the veteran Australia international following a lengthy transfer pursuit which began before the World Cup.

Schwarzer has submitted a formal transfer request in a bid to push through a move to the Gunners, but Hughes still believes the 37-year-old keeper could ultimately stay in west London.

When asked about the latest offer, he said: "There wasn't an improved offer from Arsenal. It was exactly the same one that was put forward in May.

"The situation hasn't moved on. There's been contact but no improved offer.

"I don't know if Arsenal are trying to disrupt him. There are many things clubs, players and agents do to unsettle players.

"Mark is aware of the interest of Arsenal. That knowledge is distracting and disruptive.

"But the status quo is the same - we wouldn't encourage an improved bid. It's not at all inevitable he will leave."

Meanwhile, Hughes has revealed that the Cottagers are close to completing the signing of Benfica defender Rafik Halliche.
