Hughes: Cottagers deserved point
23 Aug 2010 - 07:26:55
Mark Hughes claimed Fulham deserved a point from Sunday's 2-2 draw with Manchester United on the quality of their second-half performance.
The Cottagers twice came from behind to hold the Red Devils at Craven Cottage with giant defender Brede Hangeland finding the net at both ends during a dramatic final six minutes.
Simon Davies cancelled out Paul Scholes' early opener before Hangeland inadvertently turned a corner past his own goalkeeper in the 84th minute.
The writing looked to be on the wall when United were awarded a penalty three minutes later but goalkeeper David Stockdale signalled a late rally after saving Nani's spot-kick.
"Certainly, United were the better team for the majority of the first half," said Hughes.
"But I just sense that we had a little more relief towards the end of the half and then we took that into the second half."
Stockdale was again deputising for Arsenal transfer target Mark Schwarzer and Hughes was delighted with the performance of his young keeper.
"Stockdale has done very well, he's a good young keeper," he added.
"We're pleased with what he's producing at the moment but it's always difficult for young keepers.
"They get by initially on enthusiasm, but can they keep it up over time? We've got to be careful with him."
