Hodgson eyes Olympic post

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson has admitted he would be honoured to lead a British team at the 2012 Olympics. The experienced coach has emerged as a leading candidate for the job after independent chairman of the Football Association Lord Triesman confirmed that he was looking for an Englishman to take charge of the side. Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson was initially suggested as the best man for the job, but that was when a combined British XI was being touted. That plan has since been scuppered, with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland unwilling to be involved in a joint venture. It now appears that Team GB will be made up entirely of English players, and Cottagers chief Hodgson has confirmed that he would be willing to oversee the gold medal push. Contender"I've been a major contender to be England manager in the past and never had the job," he told Daily Star Sunday. "If you want to know has there been any contact from anyone about the Olympics, then the answer is 'no'. "It is a long way off, 2012, but whoever gets that job, it is going to be a great honour for them. "If it ever came about that people thought I would be the right man for the job, of course I would be happy to take it." Triesman has admitted that he would be 'very disappointed' if a coach had not been named by the end of 2009.
