Hodgson - Europe testing us

24 August 2009 08:29
Roy Hodgson believes Fulham's participation in Europe is already impacting on his squad after Danny Murphy joined the injury list. Murphy picked up a calf problem in Sunday's 2-0 home defeat by Chelsea and is doubtful for Thursday's Europa League tie against Amkar Perm. Andy Johnson suffered a shoulder injury in the first leg against the Russian side last Thursday, while Hodgson revealed several other members of his squad are carrying knocks. The Fulham boss admits playing in Europe is already testing the depth of his squad and he is unsure if his skipper will be fit for the long trek to Russia. "Carvalho's foot caught Danny on the calf and it was stiffening up so he had no chance of carrying on," said Hodgson. "It is much too early to say if Murphy will be fit in time. "We knew being in Europe would cause us a degree of problems. There are a number of other players nursing knocks as well so it will test the depth of the squad out to the ultimate degree. "But we will try and do the best we can. We have a two-goal cushion to play on and we have to try and make certain we give a better performance than we did against Chelsea."
