Harrods deserves a dressing down after Shakhtar Donetsk debacle

Unless they had seriously misjudged the vagaries of the British spring, it is unlikely that the millionaire players of Shakhtar Donetsk arrived on Wednesday in Knightsbridge sporting any of those items. [LNB]Nevertheless, they were turned away. Which came as something of an embarrassment to the owner of the shop, Mohamed Fayed, as they were attempting to visit ahead of their game against his Fulham in the Europa Cup on Thursday night. [LNB]A spokesman for the store was full of apologies on Thursday about the decision by a doorman, but having spent a bewildered hour in the place myself recently, I can only say the overzealous security man did the Ukrainian footballers a favour. [LNB]Never in the history of commerce has so much unnecessary tat been assembled in one place at such inflated cost as it has at Harrods. There is nothing there that could not be more easily and certainly more cheaply sourced elsewhere. [LNB]The players would have been much better off walking a couple of hundred yards up the road to Hyde Park for a kickaround. [LNB]Indeed, now thanks to Shakhtar's humiliation, we all know the prescribed list of clothing at the store that claims to sell everything. [LNB]And the best advice for any visiting footballer caught inside in future, is to buy a pair of flip flops and get kicked out as soon as you can. [LNB]
