Fulham v Atletico Madrid - Preview

12 May 2010 15:16

Fulham enter the biggest game in their history tonight, as they take on Atletico Madrid in the Europa League Final.

It has been a campaign to remember for Fulham, who have repeatedly defied the odds to advance through the rounds, and are well-deserving of their place in the final in Hamburg.

Fulham beat Shaktar Donetsk, Juventus, Wolfsburg and Hamburg after progressing through the group stages, to earn their right to compete for the trophy.

Their domestic season has been a mixed bag though, as they have struggled for consistency and goals. In fact, leading scorer Bobby Zamora has notched more goals on the continent (nine) than he has in the league (eight), in far less games.

Fulham will welcome back almost a complete team who missed the final day 4-0 humbling by Arsenal, with the likes of Brede Hangeland, Aaron Hughes, Danny Murphy and Zoltan Gera expected to return.

The Cottagers can also recall Damien Duff after his recent injury, but are sweating desperately on the fitness of Bobby Zamora. The former Tottenham and West Ham man has been struggling with an Achilles tendon problem for a few weeks and failed to train yesterday evening.

Fulham will hope to be able to call on him and any decision looks set to be last minute.

After been booted out of the Champions League, Atletico have only managed to beat Galatasary by a clear aggregate victory, with Sporting Lisbon and Valencia beaten on away goals.

Liverpool were their opponents in the semi-finals, where an extra-time winner from Diego Forlan at Anfield sent the Rojiblancos through on away goals.

Atletico have also had a mixed domestic season, starting in terrible fashion and changing managers in November, with current incumbent Quique Sanchez Flores taking charge.

They will also compete in a domestic cup final, with their Copa Del Rey final against Sevilla due next week.

Atletico also rested a number of key players on Saturday, so will recall Forlan, Sergio Aguero and Simao, among others, to the first team again.
