Forget Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto'o, Thierry Henry or Andres Iniesta - Xavi was named the Champions League final man of the match with the help of Fulham manager Roy Hodgson. The 29-year-old Spain midfielder capped a fine season, which saw him on the short list for FIFA World Player of the Year, by helping to steer Barcelona to their 2-0 defeat of Manchester United in Rome's Olympic Stadium. And well-travelled coach Hodgson, part of the UEFA Technical Study Group that selected the game's outstanding player, said: 'Xavi was outstanding, he epitomised the outstanding Barcelona midfield performance; the passing of the ball, the movement.
