Fulham 4 Tottenham 0: Harry horror show as 10-man Spurs crash out of FA Cup

31 January 2011 10:24
Magic of the Cup? It would be one explanation for a disappearing Tottenham defence. Now you see 'em, now you don't. So much for the year ending in a one. [LNB]Fulham made Spurs pay for a first-half performance reminiscent of the opening 45 minutes away at Inter Milan. In the San Siro, they were three goals behind and down to 10 men after 14 minutes and four down by half-time. At Craven Cottage, they were two goals behind and down to 10 men after 14 minutes and four down by half-time. Only this time, there was no Gareth Bale to salvage any respectability. [LNB]Bale's thrilling hat-trick against Inter glossed over a 4-3 defeat but the Wales winger was absent with a back injury and there was nobody willing or able to deputise. Fulham coasted into the fifth round and a date at home to Bolton or Wigan. [LNB] Seeing red: Michael Dawson was sent off early on[LNB]Up for the cup THE MANAGERS[LNB]Mark Hughes made only one change from last week, with Carlos Salcido in for Chris Baird.[LNB]THE FANS[LNB]A few empty seats but nearly 22,000 supporters inside Craven Cottage made for a decent atmosphere.[LNB]MAGIC MOMENT[LNB]John Pantsil's celebratory sprint around three sides of the ground after the final whistle. [LNB]Mark Hughes talked of getting to the final after this display. His team could easily have added to two Danny Murphy penalties and goals from Brede Hangeland and Moussa Dembele. [LNB]Harry Redknapp shrugged off the defeat and will search for a signing to give his team a fillip before the transfer deadline. Spurs have been off the boil since the turn of the year and played like a team with other priorities. [LNB]Rafael van der Vaart, Redknapp's last deadline-day coup, struggled to get involved and was booked as he took out his frustrations with a shot from the halfway line and a late challenge on Murphy.[LNB] Luka Modric was asked to start deep in central midfield on the toes of the central defenders but barely got a kick, and his role changed when Redknapp was forced to reshuffle after Michael Dawson's four-minute meltdown ended with a red card. [LNB] Happy days: Mousa Dembele celebrates with team-mates after scoring Fulham's fourth goal[LNB]Clint Dempsey had already put a free header wide when Dawson, having won the ball, turned a blind pass towards Alan Hutton and gave it to Andy Johnson, who released Dempsey on goal. Dembele cleverly blocked Dawson's recovery run and Hutton careered back to bundle the American over for a penalty. Murphy celebrated signing a one-year contract extension by opening the scoring. [LNB]Three minutes later, Fulham's captain was tucking his second penalty of the game into the opposite corner and Dawson was heading for the dressing room. This time, the Spurs skipper tried a Cruyff turn on the edge of his own area, lost the ball to Dembele and grabbed a fistful of the Belgian's shirt as his shot was saved by Heurelho Gomes. [LNB] Spot on: Danny Murphy scores witbh an early penalty to give Fulham a 1-0 lead[LNB]Match facts FULHAM (4-4-2): Stockdale 6; Pantsil 6,Hughes 6, Hangeland 6, Salcido 6; Duff 7, Murphy 7 (Greening 74min, 5), Sidwell 7, Dempsey 8; A Johnson 7 (Gera 68, 6),Dembele 8 (Davies 81). Subs not used: Cudicini,Corluka, Kranjcar, Pavlyuchenko.Bookings: Van der Vaart.[LNB]Man of the match: Moussa Dembele.[LNB]Referee: Phil Dowd 7. [LNB]Redknapp thought it was 'harsh' but he had not seen a replay. When he does, he might agree referee Phil Dowd made the right call and was left with little option but to send off Dawson, who will miss Wednesday's game at Blackburn. [LNB]With Younes Kaboul out for six weeks after a knee operation, Ledley King injured and Jonathan Woodgate not ready to return after his long injury lay-off, Tottenham's options are few. [LNB]William Gallas is carrying a nagging hip injury but was forced on after Dawson's dismissal, and it was like a Fulham training exercise as Damien Duff tore past Benoit Assou-Ekotto and crossed for his strikers to practise their finishing. [LNB]Throw in a large helping of clowning from Gomes and it was a defensive shambles. One spill from the Braziliankeeper led to a poorly defended corner and Hangeland swept in the thirdat the far post. [LNB]The fourth, in the third minute of first-half added time, was a wonderful goal which didn't deserve to be tainted by more awful defending. Dembele collected possession on halfway, jinked past Sebastien Bassong's feeble challenge and carried the ball to the edge of the Spurs area before side-stepping Gallas and curling a left-footer low into the corner of the net. [LNB][LNB] [LNB] Three and easy: Brede Hangeland scores Fulham's third goal at Craven Cottage[LNB]It was his first goal since September and there were other glimpses of skill from him, and pace from Johnson, which suggested Hughes's team will ease away from relegation trouble if they can keep them fit and add Bobby Zamora to the strike options. [LNB] [LNB] Doubling up: Danny Murphy scores his second goal from the penalty spot[LNB]Fulham had already made it a club record win against Spurs but might have scored more. Gomes saved well from Dempsey, who also whipped a 20-yarder just over. Aaron Hughes headed against the bar from a corner and Jermaine Jenas cleared off the line. Gomes also saved with his foot from Zoltan Gera.[LNB] [LNB] FA CUP LIVE: Fulham 4 Tottenham 0 - All the action as it happenedRedknapp tells Tottenham board: Don't sell Bale at any costSign me up!
