Fernandes eyes regular role

Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes has stressed he will be seeking a regular playing role in the 2009/10 season. Fernandes made 17 Premier League appearances for City last campaign but in just three of those outings he made the starting XI. The Switzerland international has been linked with a move away from Eastlands this summer, with Fulham and St Etienne mooted as potential suitors. "It is going to be a big year for me. I will not be looking to sit on the bench all the time," said the 22-year-old. "I am aware that it is a squad game but I need to play." Fernandes, who joined City from FC Sion in 2007, faces strong competition for a first-team role in the new campaign after boss Mark Hughes signed midfielder Gareth Barry last month.
