Clarke was a goalscorer of the highest order, a natural poacher. 1965-68, 100 appearances, 57 goals Fulham's relegation from the first division in 1968 cost the club Allan Clarke, sold to Leicester City for (effectively) £150,000. Bobby Robson, the manager at the time, noted that the club received "many astounding offers" for Clarke, and the player wanted first-division football, so that was that.
