Europa League draw: Aston Villa Everton and Fulham learn European fate

07 August 2009 13:55
Villa, who qualified for the Europa League by finishing sixth in the Premier League, were drawn against Rapid Vienna - a side that finished second in their domestic league, four points behind Red Bull Salzburg, and were denied a European trophy by an English side in 1985 when Everton beat them in the Cup Winners' Cup final. Fulham's reward for beating Vetra of Lithuania 6-0 on aggregate in the third qualifying round is a tie against Russian Premier Liga side Amkar Perm. Amkar finished fourth in their domestic league to qualify for the competition but are only 12th in the 2009 campaign with four wins from their 16 games. Everton will take on Czech side Sigma Olomouc in the Europa League play-offs. David Moyes' side, who reached the FA Cup final last season and finished fifth in the Premier League, will be at home in the first leg against the side who knocked out Aberdeen in the third qualifying round of the competition. Hearts will face Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb, who were eliminated from the Champions League after a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Red Bull Salzburg in the third qualifying round. "They are a very famous club but, with the right preparation, it is a game I believe we can win," he told Hearts Media. Shakhtar Donetsk will begin the defence of their Europa League crown against Turkish side Sivasspor. Mircea Lucescu's side won the tournament last season under its old guise as the Uefa Cup, and after being surprisingly bundled out of the Champions League by FC Timisoara on away goals they now have the chance to retain the trophy. The big-spending Ukrainians face a Sivasspor side which for long spells led the Turkish Super Lig last season, but who were thrashed 5-0 in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie by Anderlecht and dropped down into the second-tier tournament. Valencia, 2004 UEFA Cup winners and Champions League regulars, take on Norwegian side Stabaek while 2008 champions Zenit St Petersburg face Portuguese side Nacional, from the island of Madeira.
