Cottagers turn to Hodgson

28 Dec 2007 - 16:53:27

Former Blackburn Rovers boss Roy Hodgson has been named as Lawrie Sanchez's successor as Fulham manager.

Sanchez was axed just before Christmas and the Cottagers have since slipped into the bottom three under the guidance of caretaker boss Ray Lewington, who will take charge of the team for Saturday's crunch clash with Birmingham City.

Fulham drew 1-1 with Wigan Athletic last Saturday before slumping to a 5-1 loss at Spurs on Boxing Day.

Hodgson's appointment is something of a surprise as former Fulham player John Collins was thought to be the favourite for the role after his shock departure from Hibernian.

The 60-year-old Hodgson coached Blackburn a decade ago and has also been in charge of many club sides including Internazionale, Udinese and Malmo as well as managing Switzerland and Finland.

He confirmed his departure from the Finland job last month and had been linked with the Republic of Ireland managerial vacancy.

Hodgson said of his appointment on the Cottagers' official website: "I'm delighted to have been offered this opportunity with Fulham.

"After long talks with the chairman and the board I'm convinced that we can take the club to a new level.

"I'm determined that we'll overcome the current position, which I understand will be a challenge, but one that I will relish.

"I'm very much looking forward to training with the team on Sunday, and will of course be at St Andrew's tomorrow to watch the vital clash against Birmingham City."
