World Cup 2014 - 98 days to go: France 1998

The 16th FIFA World Cup was held in France for the second time after they beat Morocco in the bidding process for the right to host. The tournament was held between 10th June and 12th July with the final being staged in Paris at the Stade de France.

France became the 6th host nation to win the title after they beat Brazil 3-0 in the final with a golden generation team consisting of Zinedine Zidane who scored twice in the final and inflicted the heaviest defeat on Brazil since 1930. The final was notable for the pre-match omission of Ronaldo only for him to be reinstated 45 minutes before kick-off.

Croatia finished 3rd in France and the Netherlands 4th with Davor Suker claiming the top scorer accolade with 6 goals and Ronaldo being named the best player. In total, 64 matches were played with a 2.67 goal to game ratio (171).
