France boss Didier Deschamps: The spirit is there, as is the quality

Didier Deschamps was delighted to see France recapture their winning 'spirit' of old after watching Blaise Matuidi fire Les Bleus to a 2-1 friendly victory over Serbia.

The Euro 2016 hosts stepped up their preparations for next summer's tournament with a second straight win, following up their 1-0 triumph over Portugal with a convincing display in Bordeaux.

Matuidi headed home Bacary Sagna's pinpoint cross in the ninth minute and doubled up just 16 minutes later, rasping home a stunning strike from the edge of the area.

Aleksandar Mitrovic dragged Serbia back into the game shortly before half-time but France could and perhaps should have won by a greater margin.

Deschamps told L'Equipe: "Against Portugal we rediscovered our defensive solidity but the attacking aspects were less effective.

"Tonight we enjoyed a good first half and created many opportunities. The second half wasn't as good but maybe that's because I made quite a few changes.

"The spirit is there, as is the quality.

"It's good that we're once again doing the things we did before, during and after the World Cup."

"Matuidi scored two great goals. He's feeling confident and it shows. That makes us all feel good."

Goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris added: "Our aim was to regain our confidence, and we did that well.

"We will look to improve even further, especially in the finer details.

"Tonight we should have killed the game off and not left it at 2-1 right to the end.

"The Serbs took advantage of our turnovers in the middle of the pitch, and that's something we need to work towards eliminating."
