Anxious wait for France defender Raphael Varane as he suffers thigh injury

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane faces an anxious wait to see if he will be fit to take his place in France's Euro 2016 squad.

France will host this summer's tournament and Varane was named in coach Didier Deschamps' 23-man squad on May 12 .

But while training with Champions League finalists Real over the weekend, he suffered a thigh injury which could put his place at risk.

A brief statement on Real's website on Sunday read: "After tests today our player Raphael Varane has been diagnosed with a grade 2 injury in the left femoral biceps. Pending evolution."

The injury is likely to rule Varane out of Saturday's showdown with city rivals Atletico Madrid in Milan, though Pepe and Sergio Ramos were likely to be selected ahead of him in any case.

Varane was heavily involved in a bad-tempered finale to the two teams' previous Champions League final in 2014 when he was confronted on the field by Atleti coach Diego Simeone, who was sent to the stands for his part in the incident.

Reports in Spain suggest Varane faces a three-week lay-off, which, with the European Championship starting on June 10, would cast doubt over his spot.

Lyon defender Samuel Umtiti, who can cover either the centre-back or left-back berths, was named among Deschamps' eight reserves and would appear the favourite to step into the squad if needed.

Umtiti's club-mate Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and St Etienne's Loic Perrin are also considered candidates, along with Atletico's Lucas Hernandez.
