Sheff cooks up win

Gary McSheffrey's two deflected goals ensured Scunthorpe avoided an FA Cup upset as they won 2-0 away at Forest Green.

The 32-year-old journeyman's efforts either side of the break were both wickedly diverted in off Rovers' defenders, but the Conference side gave a good account of themselves against League One opposition.

Scunthorpe went close after only 39 seconds when Lyle Taylor was denied by keeper Sam Russell, before McSheffrey's 21st-minute shot spun up off a home defender and wrong-footed Russell to put United in front.

Forest Green played good football with winger James Norwood particularly dangerous on the break, and Kurtis Guthrie came close to bringing them level.

His first shot was snuffed out by Scunthorpe stopper Sam Slocombe, and Miguel Llera hacked the rebound clear.

Rovers continued to threaten after the break and Marcus Kelly drilled wide after getting in behind the visiting defence.

The Iron gave themselves some breathing space via McSheffrey's second deflected strike of the afternoon on the hour.

And substitute Jennison Myrie-Williams almost put Scunthorpe out of sight nine minutes later, but his 25-yard volley from McSheffrey's floated corner crashed against the crossbar.
