Fabio Capello has picked his second England squad for Wednesday night’s
game against France, with one familiar face recalled into the setup.
David Beckham is now on course to receive his 100th England cap and join a
list of greats which include Peter Shilton and Bobby Charlton. This comes after
heavy criticism from England fans when Beckham was banished from Capello’s
first game in charge, against Switzerland in February.
Last week, the England manager named a provisional list of 30 players, which
included a few shocks. David Wheater was called up for the first time after
some impressive displays for Middlesbrough this season; Gabriel Agbonlahor left
out of the Under-21 squad so he could join the first team; Theo Walcott recalled
after playing well since Eduardo’s horrific leg injury.
On Saturday, Capello cut this squad to 23, with Wheater, Agbonlahor, Ashley
Young, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Jermain Defoe and Jermaine Jenas being the casualties,
and Matthew Upson withdrawing due to injury. Later on in the evening, Scott
Carson pulled out after an injury during Villa’s shock loss against Sunderland,
and Paul Robinson was asked to join up with the squad.
After Sunday’s ‘big four’ games, Chris Kirkland vacated another
goalkeeping spot in the 23, after a back injury failed to deteriorate from Wigan’s
Saturday game against Blackburn. Robert Green was called up Sunday evening after
an amazing string of games for West Ham.
A big debate will be about who has the captain’s armband. John Terry
was injured for the Switzerland game, so didn’t take it then. Now he wants
it back, but Rio Ferdinand will want to make it his, and Beckham will want it
for sentimental value. All in all this could start a big feud.
Another problem is Ashley Cole’s inclusion. Many people believe he should
have been left out after what happened in the game against Tottenham, where
he went in high on Alan Hutton and then abused the referee. This was spotted
by TV cameras, and started a big argument over the use of bad language beginning
to appear in grassroots football. Some think that if Ashley Cole isn’t
included, then children will notice the consequences, and stop using this foul
behaviour.
All eyes will be on David Beckham in Wednesday’s game, but hopefully
this won’t affect the other players in the squad, and we are in for a
good night of English domination.
