Evans double downs Cobblers

Northampton remain rooted to the bottom of the Football League after promotion-chasing Fleetwood ran out 2-0 winners at Highbury.

Winger Gareth Evans gave Fleetwood the lead midway through the first half with a calm strike under pressure after Steven Schumacher picked out his run through the middle.

Jamille Matt should have made it two before the break. Jon Parkin's hard work paid off as the big striker cut the ball back from the byline and Matt, making his first start since October. headed over from barely a yard.

Northampton's chances were limited, although John Marquis found a way through just after the restart only for Mark Roberts to make a vital block.

Matt Duke denied Fleetwood from point-blank range after Matt was left unmarked, before Emile Sinclair nearly caught out the hosts out on the break.

The visitors looked likely to grab an equaliser but Fleetwood finally found another gear with 11 minutes remaining.

Parkin was sent clear down the right and the striker chose o chip the ball in to the back post rather than shoot and Evans was the grateful recipient for his second of the afternoon to seal victory.
