Zenit planning bid for Mutu

Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg are preparing an audacious bid to entice Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu to the club.

According to recent reports in the Italian media, the Romania striker is being monitored and if any deal is to go through, Viola sporting director Pantaleo Corvino would be keen to replace him with Lazio's Macedonia international Goran Pandev.

Mutu has played in Italy for much of his career and has represented Internazionale, Verona, Parma, Juventus.

He joined Chelsea for the 2003/04 season in what proved to be an ill-fated spell in England.

In September 2004, his contract was terminated for failing a drugs test and was given a seven-month ban.

Later the Court of Arbitration for Sport decided he was in breach of contract and was ordered to pay the London-based club £14.65million in compensation.
