Glenn: FIFA needs reformer

Sepp Blatter's successor as FIFA president must ensure fundamental changes are made to the world governing body, according to the FA's new chief executive Martin Glenn.

Glenn said UEFA president Michel Platini would be a "popular" choice but that reforms of FIFA were just as important as the identity of the next president.

Blatter announced on June 2 he is to step down as president between December and March following the corruption crisis that has rocked FIFA.

Glenn, who took over as FA chief executive six weeks ago, said: "It's about how to reform the organisation as much as who does it.

"I cannot read Platini's mind but he's clearly thinking about it and I'm sure there will be clarity on that in a couple of weeks. He would clearly be a popular candidate.

"We know that Blatter has got to go but it's not just about him, we have to get a FIFA that is more open and more like a normal sporting body and that is able to spend more on the grassroots and less either on the corruption or inefficient spending.

"We are watching what is happening but we cannot drive it on our own. We need to agree what to do and we are working with UEFA on this."

Glenn also said there was little if any chance of FA vice-chairman David Gill, who is Britain's FIFA vice-president, standing to succeed Blatter.
