Turkish giants Fenerbahce on Wednesday announced that coach Aykut Kocaman has resigned from his position.

"The resignation request passed on to the club by Aykut Kocaman has been accepted by the board," Fenerbahce said in a statement published on their website.

However, neither party explained the reasons behind the departure.

"It is a surprise for us too. There has been no incident or misunderstanding. Aykut is perhaps tired," Fenerbahce vice-president Abdullah Kigili told television channel NTV.

Kocaman, 48, departs after leading Fenerbahce to the semi-finals of this season's Europa League. They also finished second in the Turkish Super Lig behind bitter rivals Galatasaray.
