Bring it on, says Basel coach after United win

Basel's German coach Heiko Vogel said Thursday the Swiss minnows are ready to take on the best in Europe after their shock victory over Manchester United put them in the last 16 of the Champions League.

"No matter the opponent, we are ready for the challenge and we want to continue to make waves," Vogel told Germany's Sky Sports News with giants Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan or Bayern Munich as possible opponents.

"It was obviously a long night, but we have not had time to really celebrate Sunday as we play our next game (in Swiss championship)."

Basel will find out who they will face when the draw is made on Friday, December 16 in Nyon, but the Swiss team are riding a wave of euphoria after their stunning 2-1 win over United on Tuesday.

The Swiss are in the last 16 for the first time since 2002-03 after they rocked United in the ninth minute when Basel skipper Marco Streller turned in the opener from Xherdan Shaqiri's left-wing cross.

Swiss striker Alexander Frei made the game safe with an 84th-minute header, before United's Phil Jones scored a consolation goal with a minute to play, but United's injury-time onslaught proved fruitless.

Vogel, who took over as coach in October after ex-Bayern Munich star Thorsten Fink quit to train German league club Hamburg, said Basel had shown "anything is possible in football," after their "David against Goliath" win.

Basel finish second in Group C, behind leaders Benfica, while United finish third to end up in the Europa League.
