Porto have sacked head coach Julen Lopetegui with the club off the pace in the Primeira Liga title race.

The 49-year-old Spaniard took charge of the Dragons in May 2014 and swiftly conducted a major squad overhaul, bringing the likes of Bruno Martins Indi, Cristian Tello, Ivan Marcano and Oliver Torres to the club.

But despite the fact Lopetegui guided Porto to the Champions League quarter-finals in 2014-15, he failed to win any domestic silverware and with the team currently four points behind league leaders Sporting, he has been cut loose.

A statement published on Porto's official website announced his departure from the Estadio do Dragao and confirmed former assistant coach Rui Barros as interim boss ahead of Sunday's trip to Boavista.
