Five FC Porto players are to be charged over an alleged assault on ground staff at a Portuguese league game against Benfica, news agency Lusa reported on Tuesday.

Brazilians Givanildo (known as Hulk) and Helton, Uruguayan pair Cristian Rodriguez and Jorge Fucile, and Romanian Cristian Sapunaru are accused of attacking two security officers in the tunnel at the December 20, 2009, fixture at Benfica.

If found guilty they could face prison sentences of up to three years and five years in the case of Sapunaru.

The brawl sparked a major falling out between the Portuguese giants with the domestic football league handing out bans of four and six months to Hulk and Sapunaru.

These suspensions were subsequently reduced to three and four matches respectively by the Portuguese Football Federation.
