Smith tempted back to club football

The 69-year-old former St Mirren, Aberdeen and Dundee United boss was paraded yesterday at the club's training base at Stirling University along with May and second assistant coach Steven Pressley. Falkirk revealed a new management structure at the club with a Head of Football Development to be appointed later but veteran boss Smith, who had been scouting for Scotland manager George Burley, looked forward to returning to day-to-day involvement with the Bairns. He said: "It's fantastic, a great feeling, like the first time I came in to management. "Eddie phoned me about a fortnight and asked if I would work with him and I said, 'Why not?' "I have enjoyed what I was doing with the international team, bringing back reports for George but I've missed the everyday working within football, working towards getting a result on a Saturday. "But it's a drug, even though I know you tend to forget the days when you don't get a result and you are not in a good mood. "I will be a coach first of all, to help with the development of the team and to get results. "The other task is the development of the management team, to guide them and warn them of the usual pitfalls that you come across." Smith's first task, ironically, will be provide a report on Falkirk's Europa League opponents Vaduz who hail from Liechtenstein. The first game will be at The Falkirk Stadium on July 16 with the return game on July 23, leaving little time for the Bairns to prepare. "I am going over on Friday to see them," Smith said. "We have to get up and running right away. "They will be of a good standard and we will have a difficult job in terms of match fitness. "But whilst Eddie and Steven are dealing with that, I will compile a dossier that will hopefully help takes us through."
