May positive despite European exit
The Bairns were unable to repel a dominate display from Pierre Littbarski's side as the Liechtenstein team bounced back from their 1-0 defeat at Westfield to progress 2-1 on aggregate.
A first-half goal from defender Emil Noll levelled the scores and May's men survived further onsalught to go into extra time.
But left winger Franz Burgmeier - a constant threat in both ties - rifled home the 105th-minute winner.
Vaduz have little pedigree in Europe and come from the small Alpine principality with a population of just 35,000.
But they have players with German Bundesliga experience and May, whose new-look young side are only just emerging, is staying optimistic.
He said: "It was a tough night. The first half was poor the way we played, but what I will say is that our back four were absolutely fantastic the majority of the night.
"Once I get the right players in the midfield and forward areas I think you will see a massive difference.
"We had a couple of boys who were carrying knocks, but unfortunately we've not got the biggest of squads. I'm not going to make that as an excuse.
"The tie has come far too early from us. I think they are a week from their season. If we were to play them a week before our season I'm more than confident we would do better.
"We have never been in Europe before and it's a learning curve for everybody."
May, who debated the red card for Carl Finnigan after the final whistle for an alleged elbow, felt positives included the fine display of young Austrian keeper Robert Olejnik.
He added: "I've got great confidence in Robert. I don't think there is a better goalkeeper in Scotland for his age. It's up to him to take the next stage, to believe in himself. He'll make
mistakes like anybody else but it's how you react."
Vaduz coach Littbarski felt his side were worthy winners as he looks forward to locking horns with Slovan Liberec of the Czech Republic in the third round.
The German added: "We dominated the game for 90 minutes, tons of chances. Their goalkeeper was really great too. We deserved it really.
"I promised we would show much better football and I was very
happy with the performance."
