May backs Bairns to succeed

Falkirk were tipped by many people to struggle following the loss of more than a dozen players after escaping relegation on the final day of the season. May took on his first managerial role after John Hughes left for Hibernian and soon saw his side exit the Europa League to Liechtenstein outfit Vaduz. But he has set about rebuilding the team with the capture of young players such as on-loan Liverpool midfielder Ryan Flynn and former Celtic trainee Kjartan Finnbogason. He has been relatively encouraged by some features of his team's performances during three SPL defeats by Rangers, Hibs and Dundee United. The tough start to the campaign continues on Monday when Aberdeen visit Falkirk Stadium and May has warned that anyone who writes off his team could be in for a surprise. "If we get the three points, great, if we get a point, great," May said. "We'll just keep working towards the tail end of the season and see where we are. "With the quality we have got, I'm confident we will still be in the SPL. "But it's going to be a long, hard season for everybody, not just Falkirk. "There will be no easy games in the course of the season so if people think we are going to be a pushover then let them think that, and we will go and see what the coming weeks hold in terms of results." Finnbogason, who joined on a six-month loan from Norwegian side Sandefjord, made a goalscoring debut in the 2-1 defeat at Tannadice and May has been encouraged by the Icelandic striker's all-round start. "He has done really well, even in the bounce games," May said. "We will work him towards what we want to achieve. If we get the ball in the box in the right areas, I'm sure he will be dangerous and will score a number of goals." Finnbogason will soon be joined up front by Mark Stewart, who is nearing his first appearance of the season following a groin problem. "Mark Stewart is not very far away," May said. "Maybe Monday is a little bit early but we will work towards that. "Mark has got good qualities and we can certainly use those qualities sometimes so it will be another boost for the forward line. "He is a good football player as well as a good person, which is important when you're part of a group. "He wants to achieve things for the football club as well as himself, so it will be a big bonus when he eventually gets back to what Mark Stewart can do and I'm sure he will score a number of goals for the club."
