Hughes hits out at 'abysmal' fans

Fans group the Bairns' Trust sent a letter to chairman Campbell Christie this week calling for Hughes to be replaced and threatening protests during the Hearts encounter at Westfield which never materialised. Hughes claimed the incident had been "abysmal" in its timing before such a huge match which ended with his side remaining four points adrift of Inverness at the foot of the SPL. However, with a Scottish Cup semi-final to follow against Dunfermline next Sunday, Hughes admitted the calls for his head had galvanised his squad for the Hearts stalemate. He said: "I feel credit is due to the players, especially after that letter from the fans' trust. I think the timing of it was absolutely abysmal. "I understand their frustrations, I really do, but the club issuing a press release saying we're right behind Yogi is not enough. "Thanks very much for standing by me but I would like the club and the board of directors to investigate what happened and take appropriate action against the people responsible for it. I wouldn't like to think it's just going to get swept under the carpet. "That was not helpful to my team at all, it was absolutely diabolical what they did. "I think there's people in positions who have really harmed the club and I think they've acted very irresponsibly. "I don't think they have the support they think they have. I think the true Falkirk fans realise we're in a dogfight and want to stand shoulder to shoulder with us, and I think that was evident today. "One thing it has done is galvanised us a little bit. "Don't worry about me, what will be will be, but don't do that to my players or to my club. I'm looking for my club to stand up really strong and deal with certain individuals." On the park, Hughes was happy to take what could be a crucial point and is hoping for another boost for the post-split matches in the shape of a semi-final win next weekend. He added: "Coming off a poor result last week I felt the performance was spirited. "We've got a big game to look forward to next week. We'll take the positives and try and build on that for the semi-final. "It's going to be a very difficult game. I've watched Dunfermline a few times now and they're in a false position in the league. I think the two teams are even. "But if we could get through that it could give us a great confidence boost for last five games of the season. "Going into them we're capable of winning the last five games on the season. "I wouldn't wish relegation on anybody. You're looking for other results but I really only concentrate on myself. "I'm a great believer that if we win football matches, which we're capable of doing, we'll get out of it." Hearts boss Csaba Laszlo lamented his side's failure to capitalise on a hat-trick of first-half chances but, having lost no ground to nearest challengers Dundee United and Aberdeen, believes they remain in pole position to finish third. Backing Falkirk to remain in the SPL, he said: "In the first-half we should have been 2-0 or 3-0 up and the game would have been finished. "But it wasn't an easy game, we were playing against a team fighting for their life. Falkirk are not a team that I think will be relegated, they have experience. "After the results today from Dundee United and Aberdeen you can say in the last four weeks we have done a good job. "We would like to win every game but the important thing for me is that the team has in its own hands the possibility to qualify for the Europa League. It is important to stay in third position until the end of the season."
