Perryman - Grecians inconsolable at Stansfield death
Exeter director of football Steve Perryman admits the club are struggling to come to terms with the death of striker Adam Stansfield.
The popular 31-year-old forward passed away on Tuesday evening following a battle with bowel cancer.
Perryman told Sky Sports News: "We are in a state of shock. We are trying to come to terms with this. He was a super pro and a terrific team member. He will be sorely missed.
"The supporters really took Adam to their hearts and this is a severe knockback for them. The Big Bank, which is the famous end at Exeter City, is open and people can go there and lay their tributes. There are people there now who are thinking about Adam and what he meant to us all."
Perryman continued: "Everyone is going to accept this in their own particular way. Although Adam could be described as a lower-league footballer, other people have phoned me from all levels of the game expressing their condolences and asking for their wishes to be passed on to the family. When it is such an extreme case like this it transcends Premier League or Conference or whatever, it goes back to being life and people and the feelings and problems that we all have."
A statement from the Football League added: "Everyone connected with the Football League would like to express its deepest sympathy to Adam's family and friends."
