Grecians make it nine unbeaten

Exeter extended their unbeaten league run to nine games with a routine 2-0 win over a poor Carlisle Side at St James' Park.

The first half was a very dull affair with very few chances. Exeter enjoyed possession of the ball, but they struggled to break down a well-drilled Carlisle backline and it was the Cumbrians that had the best chance of the first half.

That came when Antony Sweeney turned the ball goalwards from close range, but he was denied by Exeter goalkeeper James Hamon. Exeter's best chance came from a Matt Grimes corner, but while Christian Ribeiro's header beat the goalkeeper, it failed to find a way past Danny Grainger, who headed off the line.

Craig Woodman lashed a shot wide as Exeter started the second half well and Scot Bennett broke the deadlock in the 58th minute when Grimes and Woodman combined to send the Exeter captain clear of goal and he showed great composure to beat Dan Hanford.

Exeter continued to create chances with Carlisle rarely threatening an equaliser and Matt Grimes wrapped up victory for the Grecians with a crisp left-footed shot in the last minute to complete the scoring.
