Lee Holmes scores the winner as Exeter see off Newport

Exeter City's unbeaten start to the season continued with a 1-0 win over Newport County in their Sky Bet League Two encounter.

Lee Holmes' superb individual goal midway through the second half was all that separated two teams in good form.

Newport started the better and the best chance fell midway through the first half when a cross found Padraig Amond, but his shot on the turn was straight at Exeter goalkeeper Christy Pym.

Amond then skied high with another great chance before Ben White headed off the line to deny Exeter's Jake Taylor, after Day had parried a cross straight into his path.

Seconds later, it was Exeter's Troy Brown heading off the line to deny Amond, whose header looked destined for the net.

Robbie Willmott skied high early in the second half for Newport but it was Holmes that broke that deadlock on the hour mark when he cut in from the right and curled a fine shot into the bottom corner.

Frank Nouble saw a 25-yard shot come back off the inside of the post for Newport, while Jordan Tillson skied high for Exeter after great work by Reuben Reid.

Holmes saw a header cleared off the line as Exeter looked to make it two, while Newport struggled to test Pym as the game went on.
