Young: Give MacDonald the Villa job

29 August 2010 18:36
uke Young is hoping Aston Villa caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald becomes Martin O'Neill's successor at Villa Park.[LNB] Young's first-half goal proved enough to beat Everton as Villa bounced back from a 6-0 thrashing at Newcastle and a Europa League exit against Rapid Vienna.[LNB]MacDonald has yet to decide if he wants to be considered for the job but Young told Sky Sports 1: "The boys respect Kev. He's got great football knowledge and we all think he can do the job.[LNB]"It's up to Kev whether he puts his name forward. We will have to see what happens in the coming week."[LNB]Petrov echoed Young's views on MacDonald and is keen for an end to the uncertainty over O'Neill's permanent successor.[LNB]"It (uncertainty) has not helped but we just need to go out and perform. We think he (MacDonald) deserves the job and we hope that he takes it."[LNB]Young admitted Villa had been determined to put the recent setbacks behind them against Everton and although the Merseysiders dominated for long periods Villa defended with determination.[LNB]"For the last 10 or 15 minutes they were camped in our half but we dug in and got our win.[LNB]"We were disappointed to lose by six goals against Newcastle when we let ourselves down a bit and then we went out in Europe in midweek. We just had to pick ourselves up and today we put bodies on the line."[LNB]MacDonald did not want to be drawn on whether or not he will put himself forward for the job when he speaks to owner Randy Lerner.[LNB]He said: "It's a little bit early to say. I will be in training tomorrow morning and if Mr Lerner is in I'll speak to him then.[LNB]"You are very much in the spotlight as a manager. If I decide I want an interview, get an interview and get the job the spotlight is something I would have to accept.[LNB]"The most important thing for me is to get on the training ground with top quality players and work with them."[LNB]Everton boss David Moyes was frustrated that his side could not turn dominance into goals.[LNB]"I can't believe we lost it," he said. "I thought from first minute to last we were in control of the game.[LNB]"We have to give Aston Villa a lot of credit for how they defended.[LNB]"We have been playing well but not scoring goals. I have no complaints about the players today. They went about their jobs excellently but we just cannot get the ball in the net at the moment.[LNB]"I think the players are playing well enough to win games. We are just lacking a bit in the final third of the pitch."
