Phil Jagielka was the hero as Everton earned a 2-1 Barclays Premier League win over Newcastle at St James' Park. The central defender fired home from Leighton Baines' 36th-minute corner to complete a repair job after Leon Best had headed the Magpies in front 13 minutes earlier. Leon Osman started the fightback when he levelled after 31 minutes after exchanging passes with the excellent Mikel Arteta. Best thought he had equalised 12 minutes from time when he headed past keeper Tim Howard for a second time, but referee Howard Webb disallowed it for a push on Jagielka.
