Toffees tie up Jagielka

Everton have wrapped up the £4million signing of Sheffield United's England B international Phil Jagielka, beating off competition from the likes of Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers.

The 24-year-old, who can operate in both defence and midfield, makes a quickfire return to the Premier League following the Blades' controversial relegation last season, signing a five-year deal.

He had been at Bramall Lane for eight years, making 287 appearances and scoring 22 goals.

Toffees boss David Moyes told his club's official website: "We've been trying to get Phil in for most of the summer. We're delighted to have got him in the end.

"He will bring competition for places and versatility. He's a good addition to our squad and we hope to add one or two more before the start of the season."

Jagielka himself added: "The manager was keen to sign me and that's always a nice sign. He has done fantastically well here and it's a fantastic club.

"Being in Europe, where we belong, and his pull to bring me here were massive reasons for signing."
