Everton are in talks aimed at securing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Steven Pienaar, according to the German club.
The Toffees are attempting to land the 25-year-old South Africa international on an initial season-long loan basis with a view to a permanent transfer.
"Everton have contacted us and we are currently talking to the English club," Dortmund director of sport Michael Zorc told German media.
Pienaar joined the Bundesliga club last summer on a three-year contract following Tomas Rosicky's move to Arsenal.
However, after being given the Czech Republic international's number ten shirt, the former Ajax midfielder failed to score in 25 appearances.
Meanwhile, Everton have jetted off to the USA for a two-stop pre-season tour.
The Toffees will take on Real Salt Lake on Saturday before moving on to Los Angeles for a two-week training camp.
"We finished fourth after our first US pre-season and sixth last year after another tour to the US, so that certainly didn't dissuade us when we were deciding on our destination," assistant manager Alan Irvine told the club's official website.
"The players enjoy working over there and the facilities are superb."
