Toffees launch Cahill appeal
29 Sep 2008 - 11:43:13
Everton have appealed the red card shown to Tim Cahill in the closing stages of Saturday's Merseyside derby defeat at the hands of Liverpool.
The Australian midfielder was sent off in the 80th minute of the 2-0 loss at Goodison Park by referee Mike Riley.
The Leeds-based official ruled that his lunging tackle on Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso was guilty of a straight red card and therefore an automatic three-game suspension.
"Everton have lodged an appeal with the FA over Tim Cahill's red card against Liverpool," read a club statement.
"A hearing will take place later this week and, under FA rules, Everton are permitted to provide written documentation to support their appeal."
Speaking after the defeat, Toffees boss David Moyes suggested an appeal was likely after criticising the decision to send off his midfielder.
He said: "I've had a chance to look at and I don't see a red card tackle, I really don't.
"I see a yellow card and I don't think it was the worst tackle in the game today.
"I think we were all really surprised it was a sending off."
