Toffees fear striker absence

24 Feb 2009 - 10:42:09

Everton's head physio Mick Rathbone has admitted that striker Victor Anichebe may have suffered ligament damage in the weekend draw at Newcastle United.

The 20-year-old was the victim of a late two-footed tackle by Magpies midfielder Kevin Nolan and had to be replaced shortly before half-time at St James' Park.

Initially the Toffees had feared that Anichebe had suffered a serious shin injury, but their concerns have now switched to the player's knee.

Rathbone told the club's official website: "Victor has got very bad bruising on his shin and on the outside of his ankle, but we're not overly concerned about that.

"However, he has had a series of scans and he appears to have strained ligaments on the outside of his right knee.

"He is very sore indeed and we need to take a few days to let the area settle down before we can properly make an accurate clinical evaluation.

"He's got big strong legs and that helps. I think he's just about got away with it. He bent his knee, so the strain came on the outside of the knee."
