Toffees agree defender deals

Everton have secured the services of Phil Jagielka and Joseph Yobo for the next five years after agreeing new contracts with the defensive duo.

Jagielka, who was named the Toffees' player of the season earlier in the week, and Yobo are both now contracted to the club until summer 2014.

The England defender has made 43 appearances this season while Nigeria international Yobo has turned out 31 times.

Both players have been instrumental in helping the Toffees set a new club record of 19 clean sheets this term.

"Everton are delighted contract negotiations with both Joseph Yobo and Phil Jagileka have now been successfully concluded and both players will sign new five-year deals with the club imminently," confirmed a club statement.

Speaking earlier on Friday, Yobo's agent revealed that his client was happy to agree terms to extend his six-year stay on Merseyside.

"Everton were happy to give Yobo the new deal even at 28-years-old and he'd also love to stay with the club," said agent John Shittu.

"At any rate he doesn't want to leave the United Kingdom and would only consider a move if it's to any of Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal.

"It's a good deal and we're happy with it."
