Toffees trial Vale teenager

Port Vale chairman Bill Bratt has revealed that teenage striker James Lawrie has embarked on a week-long trial at Everton. The 18-year-old Northern Ireland international has been granted permission to train with the Premier League club. Lawrie, who has a year remaining on his current deal at Vale Park, has so far made 26 appearances for the League Two side, scoring twice. Bratt told The Sentinel: "Everton asked if they can have James for a week to see whether they would be interested. We can't stand in his way and we wouldn't want to. "Every young footballer wants to play as high as possible, so he goes with our blessing and, hopefully, the lad will make it. "He has come through the ranks here and done his best for Vale, but he has to look to his career. We have to understand that."
