Sylvain Distin says Everton FC team must be better than class of 2005 to emulate top four finish
Sylvain Distin insists Everton FC must be even better than the team which finished fourth in 2005 if they are to emulate that achievement this season.
The French defender believes there are currently more Premier League sides than ever with realistic aspirations of qualifying for Europe. That makes Champions League football next term a tall order for a club with limited resources, but Distin is relishing the challenge. Last weekend’s draw with Stoke City, and subsequent wins for Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, meant the Blues dropped out of the top four and down to sixth in the table. But for the experienced 34-year-old, such fierce competition is simply par for the course in the modern English top flight. He said:
“It was the top four before but now it seems more like it should be the top six if not seven and that’s great.
“There are no easy games anymore and I don’t think you can rest any players any more.
“There are so many great games - it’s good for the fans, the league and the players so there’s no complaints from me.
“If you want to make a big deal of it then yes we should win at places like Stoke . But if you want to be realists you look at it; we had a good opposition and how much did we spend during the summer? I think less than £10m.
