Sunderland relegation fears increase as Everton secure comfortable win

Pienaar fired the visitors in front three minutes after the restart and then set up Fellaini to clinch victory 19 minutes from time with the hosts succumbing with barely a whimper. Danny Collins might have levelled with a 50th-minute header, but could only direct the ball straight at goalkeeper Tim Howard, who otherwise had little to do at the Stadium of Light. Both physios were on the pitch within seconds of kick-off after Tim Cahill and Steed Malbranque went down following a clash of heads which left the Frenchman needing stitches. The home side made light of their numerical disadvantage, with Malbranque undergoing treatment off the field, to force the game's first corner, although the visitors dealt comfortably with it. Malbranque returned with nine minutes gone, but did so just in time to see Anton Ferdinand head a dangerous Pienaar cross behind for a corner. Cahill got his head to the resulting set-piece, but his effort was punched away by keeper Marton Fulop. Kenwyne Jones lifted a volley over under pressure from Leighton Baines after latching on to Djibril Cisse's 11th-minute lay-off, but Fulop was called upon to keep out Cahill's long-range strike seconds later. The Hungarian was a relieved man four minutes later after Jo and Pienaar combined well on the edge of the penalty area, before the Brazilian fired a left-foot shot across the face of goal and just past the far post. Ricky Sbragia's men went close with 27 minutes gone when Grant Leadbitter took aim from 20 yards, but his low drive sped past the post. The Sunderland players returned to the pitch for the second half with their fans demanding much, much more, but they again started slowly. They were made to pay within three minutes when Everton took the lead from their most incisive move of the game to that point. Their seemed to be little on as Phil Neville received the ball from a throw-in wide on the right and played it into Jo's feet. However, the striker held off Ferdinand before slifing the ball through to Pienaar, who poked the ball past Fulop despite Bardsley's best efforts. Sunderland might have been back on level terms within two minutes when defender Danny Collins met Leadbitter's corner with a firm header, but he directed the ball straight at Howard. But the game was effectively over in the 71st minute when the Merseysiders took advantage of yet more woeful defending. Calum Davenport inexplicably backed away from Pienaar after he had been found in space on the right, and he squared for Fellaini to scoop the ball past the helpless Fulop.
