Roberto Martinez felt Everton should have been awarded a late penalty in their goalless draw at Swansea.
An entertaining Barclays Premier League encounter failed to produce a goal despite both sides creating some clear-cut openings, but it looked as if Everton would have the opportunity to break the deadlock after 85 minutes when Ashley Williams challenged Steven Naismith.
Williams appeared to make contact with Naismith rather than the ball but referee Stuart Attwell gave a goal-kick rather than a penalty.
"I've watched it back and it looks a penalty but it's one of those awkward incidents where the ball goes out of play and it's not much of a decision for the referee," said Everton manager Martinez.
"Ashley has made the decision to contact the ball and has contacted Naisy's legs.
"It's a clear-cut penalty but I can understand why the referee didn't give it."
Swansea ended up playing against 10 men for the fourth time in six league games this season when Everton substitute Kevin Mirallas, who had been on the pitch for less than two minutes, received a straight red card.
Attwell felt the Belgian's studs-up challenge on Swansea substitute Modou Barrow was dangerous and Everton had to handle the final moments of stoppage time with 10 men.
"I always tell my subs to come on and give real intensity, so I was pleased with the manner of Kevin Mirallas arriving on to the pitch," Martinez said.
"I thought it was more a striker trying to defend and putting in a defensive challenge and it looked worse than it actually was.
"I haven't seen in detail but it was his first challenge and sometimes you have to see it with more common sense, I felt he didn't have intention to hurt the Swansea player."
Martinez expressed his disappointment that Everton failed to secure victory by taking one of several second-half chances they created but Swansea counterpart Garry Monk pointed to the fact his side had more on-target attempts in the game - three to two.
"It was a very even game and the key to it was would have got that first goal," Monk said.
"They had chances, we had chances, but overall it's a good point for both teams.
"It probably needed a goal to liven it up but both teams were trying to score and defences came out on top."
Monk felt his side showed the right response after losing their first game of the season at Watford the previous weekend.
"I'm much happier this week than last week," Monk said.
"We showed if you can't win a game you then at least don't lose it.
"This performance was day and night to last week and it's pleasing to have a clean sheet.
"The other side of it is that Everton have got some great players but we showed that we are on an even keel with them.
"We're performing just as well as them and that shows how far we've come."
