Portsmouth v Everton preview

20 March 2009 11:25
Portsmouth play host to Everton on Saturday with the South Coast club looking to secure a vital three points in the race for survival, live on Sky Sports 1 & HD1.[LNB] Pompey currently lie just one place above the relegation spots by virtue of a superior goal difference over rivals Stoke.[LNB]Home form will surely be vital to the club's hopes of remaining in the Premier League, but with five losses in their previous six games at Fratton Park, caretaker boss Paul Hart will be demanding a dramatic improvement at the weekend.[LNB]Everton on the other hand have lost just once in thirteen matches and remain in the battle for the final Champions League spot alongside Arsenal and Aston Villa.[LNB]One chink of light for Hart and his charges though may be the profligacy of Everton on the road - the Merseysiders having notched up just four goals in their last eight away matches courtesy of Tim Cahill and a solitary own goal.[LNB]Team newsIndeed, much could depend on the fitness of top-scorer Cahill who has a chance of making a surprise return to the side this weekend.[LNB]Cahill injured his calf during last week's win over Stoke City, but after being named in the 22-man Australia squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, the Toffees talisman may be a surprise inclusion for the lunchtime kick-off.[LNB]Regardless of Cahill's fitness, boss David Moyes could well plump for the luxury of a two-man attack for the first time in months.[LNB]With Louis Saha back to full fitness and on-loan striker Jo in good form, Moyes' may opt to stray from the one-man attack that has served his team so well this season.[LNB]Meanwhile, the home side will be without winger Jermaine Pennant who suffered a calf injury at the Riverside last weekend.[LNB]Subsequently, Nadir Belhadj should take his place in the side in order to provide the pace and trickery that will be missing in Pennant's absence.[LNB]And striker David Nugent will be up against his boyhood club if he is retained in attack for the clash, having been brought up in the same town as Everton first-teamers Tony Hibbert and Leon Osman.[LNB]Possible starting XI's:Portsmouth: James, Johnson, Campbell, Distin, Hreidarsson, Belhadj, Davis, Mullins, Kranjcar, Crouch, Nugent.[LNB]Everton: Howard, Jagielka, Yobo, Lescott, Baines, Osman, Neville, Pienaar, Fellaini, Saha, Jo.[LNB]
