Portsmouth boss Paul Hart closes in on Michael Ball signing

Paul Hart is ready to turn to former Manchester City left-back Michael Ball to solve Portsmouth's defensive problems and possibly save his job. Ball, 29, is still without a club after being released by City at the end of last season, and Hart is set to sign the ex-Everton and Rangers player after seeing his side become the first Premier League team in history to lose their opening six games. Ball has also attracted interest from Notts County after being brought to City by Sven Goran Eriksson but would favour a move to Fratton Park. Hart, who faces the boot if Pompey lose in the Carling Cup at Carlisle on Tuesday, said: 'We are making too many defensive mistakes and that is costing us.'
