Paul Gascoigne in Newcastle hospital after car crash

Sad day: Gazza at a service to remember his former manager Sir Bobby Robson in September 2009[LNB]Paul Gascoigne is recovering in hospital after being involved in a car crash on Sunday night.[LNB]The former England midfielder is being treated at Newcastle General Hospital where he is believed to be in a comfortable condition.[LNB]Gazza, 43, was not driving at the time of the accident which happened at Sandhill, Newcastle, near the city's Quayside, and a 36-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.[LNB]The incident, involving a Vauxhall Astra, happened at about 9.45pm,when it is believed the car left the road, striking a nearby signpost.[LNB]Theambulance service confirmed they were called to the scene and fourambulances were sent to assist the driver and three passengers.   [LNB]Two men, including Gazza, and the female driver were taken hospital for  treatment.[LNB]A spokeswoman for Newcastle General Hospital said: 'He is in hospital and he  was brought in following a car accident.[LNB] 'We are not commenting further but he is in a comfortable condition.'  [LNB]DES KELLY ON GASCOIGNE Click here to read Des Kelly's superb column - Gazza's tale still brings a tear to the eyeNorthumbria Police said: 'At 9.45pm on Sunday, June 13 police were informed by  the ambulance service of a collision involving a Vauxhall Astra at Sandhill, on the Quayside, Newcastle.   [LNB]'For reasons yet to be established, the car left the road and collided with a sign post.   [LNB]'The female driver and two male passengers were taken to hospital with injuries  which are not described as life threatening.   [LNB]Showing support: The Gascoigne family visited Paul in hospital after the accident. Enquiries are ongoing.'[LNB]Gascoigne, who also starred for Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio and Rangers, has endured a spectacular fall from grace since hanging up hisboots in 2004.[LNB]He is due to stand trial in late July accused of driving while more than four times over the limit in February.[LNB]He pleaded not guilty to the drink-driving offence and also denied driving without insurance during an appearance before magistrates in Northallerton, North Yorkshire earlier this year.[LNB]Witnesses said the car Gazza was travelling in came hurtling around a corner, lost control, and smashed into a taxi rank sign.[LNB] Arrest: A 36-year-old women has been arrested as a result of the accident[LNB] [LNB] The car had mounted the pavement then smashed into a sign whichstands next to the Guildhall, just yards from the iconic Tyne Bridge.[LNB]Lloyd Roberts, 23, a barman at Chase bar, said: 'I didn't see the actual crash happen but I saw all of the aftermath.[LNB]'The taxi rank has been totalled so the car must have been going really fast. People have told me it was probably doing around 90mph.[LNB]'The woman driver was pulled from the car and was lying on the pavement. [LNB]'I saw Gazza being taken from the back seat and put on to an ambulance stretcher. He was strapped in and had head support. [LNB]'I didn't see any injuries or hear him speak to anyone. He was put into the back of the ambulance and a police officer was talking to him for a little while.'   [LNB]Joyce Wemyss, manager of Redhouse pub, said: 'I was working in the bar at around 9.45pm when I heard a massive screeching sound.[LNB]Highlight: Gazza during his playing days at the 1990 World Cup in Italy[LNB]'I looked out of the window and a car was hurtling around the corner and smashed into the taxi rank pole.[LNB]'There was a massive bang and lots of people rushed out of the bar to go and help.[LNB]'The driver was a woman and she was pulled out of the window yelling in pain, she was then lying on the pavement screaming until an ambulance arrived. There was a man in the front seat and Gazza in the back.[LNB]'The front of the car was completely smashed. When it car was taken away a couple of hours later there was a big dent left in the pole.'
